Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office of Catholic Education Staff Honored by National Catholic Educational Association
Sister Theresa Maugle S.S.J. Principal, of St. Genevieve Catholic School and Msgr. Charles McGroarty, Pastor of St. Matthew Parish Recognized at Annual Convention
Dozens of educators from across the Archdiocese of Philadelphia were present to see two of their own honored on March 24, 2008 at the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) annual convention, held in Indianapolis.
Sister Theresa Maugle, SSJ, Principal of St Genevieve Catholic School in Flourtown, Pa., was honored as the Region 3 Distinguished Principal of the Year. Each fall, the superintendent of schools in each diocese across the country is invited to nominate one principal for the award. From these nominees, twelve principals are selected to receive the Dr. Robert J. Kealey Distinguished Principal Award.
“Sister Theresa is truly a leader in Catholic education, one who goes the extra mile so that children may have an enjoyable, challenging and successful learning experience,” said Mary Rochford, Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Educational Services for the Office of Catholic Education. “Sister Theresa’s dedication to the total development of each child—spiritually, intellectually and emotionally—makes her a clear choice for this honor.”
Monsignor Charles McGroarty of St. Matthew Parish in Northeast Philadelphia is one of nine pastors in the nation to receive the NCEA Distinguished Pastor Award, presented for the first time at the 2008 convention. This honor will be bestowed annually to pastors who have given outstanding support to Catholic elementary education.
“One of the greatest roles of a priest is to lead people to the Lord,” said Rochford. “Monsignor McGroarty not only leads the St. Matthew Parish School students to the Lord, but he provides them the spiritual and academic foundation that allows St. Matt’s graduates to flourish in our archdiocesan high schools and beyond.”
“These two educators are role models to the hundreds of dedicated teachers, administrators and support staff who work in our schools every day to ensure our students’ academic enrichment and personal development,” said Dr. Richard McCarron, Secretary for Catholic Education. “We are blessed to have Sister Theresa Maugle and Monsignor McGroarty serving our communities and we congratulate them on these achievements and honors.”
