A graduate of Roman Catholic High School, Bishop Michael J. Bransfield was ordained to the priesthood by John Cardinal Krol for service in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on May 15, 1971. Over the years, Bishop Bransfield has served as director of liturgy at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, a Prelate of Honor, and the first rector of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

On February 22, 2005, Bishop Michael J. Bransfield was ordained and established as the Eighth Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston. He is a trustee of The Papal Foundation and is a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of The Catholic University of America and Catholic Distance University. Bishop Bransfield is also the liaison for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to the National Council of Catholic Women and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
